Dover Castle
Trip |
|
Dover Castle sits on top of the White Cliffs of Dover,
with a platform view of the English Chanel and Dover
ports.
Dover Castle dates back to Henry II (AD 1100).
Today, Dover
Castle is run by English Heritage. Much of the building
has been restored and opened to the public.
This can take
up to 1/2 a day to cover. There is a mini-train to take
you round and see the main sights, which can be useful
for those with disabilities.
|
 |
|
 |
If
you wish you can just wonder around, as there is plenty
to see, along with the spectacular views from the top of
Dover Castle.
Sitting alongside Dover Castle is the Roman Pharos (or
lighthouse), of which over half still stands. |
|
Battle of Britain
Airbase |
|
Just outside Dover
is a Battle of Britain former airbase. Part of the museums buildings date back to 1940
and bear the marks of war. Coming here you will see many relics which
remain from the Battle of Britain. |
 |
|
 |
For those of you
that served here, it will be a trip down memory lane.
You can stop and
have lunch at the pub filmed in the 'Battle of Britain' film.

Battle of Britain Memorial |
|
This
Battle of Britain Memorial site is situated in a peaceful setting in Capel-le-Ferne, just outside Dover, overlooking the English Channel.
At the Battle of Britain
Memorial you can stroll among the memorials which consist of a stone
pilot, gazing into the skies above the English Channel.
|
 |
|
 |
This stands in the
centre of 3 propellers measuring 38 metres long, which has been cut
into the chalk of the cliffs.
The Battle of
Britain Memorial over the year has ceremonial and remembrance days.
