Dover
Castle |
|
Dover Castle sits on top of the White Cliffs of Dover,
with a panaramic view of the English Chanel and Dover
ports.
Dover Castle dates back to Henry II (AD 1100).
Today, Dover
castle is run by English Heritage. Much of the
building has been restored and opened to the public.
This can take up to 1/2 a day to cover. There is a
mini-train to take you round and see the main sights,
which can be useful for those with disabilities. |
 |
|
 |
If
you wish you can just wonder around, as there is plenty to see, along with
the spectacular views from the top of Dover Castle.
Sitting alongside the Dover Castle is the Roman Pharos (or
lighthouse), of which over half still stands. |
|
Leeds Castle |
|
 |
Leeds
Castle, which is set in 500 acres of parkland with wonderful gardens,
was first built in AD 857 on two islands surround by a
lake. In 1119 the Normans rebuilt Leeds castle.
Surrounded by
a large watered moat, which now a days is rare, as many moats are now
grassed over. |
|
Today, the well kept grounds can be seen along with magnificent
views of Leeds Castle.
Along with touring the medieval castle
and gardens there are; aviaries, a maze, duckier, vineyard,
museum
of dog collars, collection of furnishings, tapestries and
paintings.

White Cliffs Of
Dover |
|
The White
Cliffs of Dover are cliffs which form part of the British
coastline facing the Straits Of Dover and France
The cliff face,
which reaches up to 106 metres high, and is made from chalk white
black flint running through it.
|
 |
|
 |
Behind the cliff face are
miles of hidden tunnels that were created during the Middle Ages
and later played a role in the defence of Britain during the
Napoleonic Wars.
The tunnels were later
enlarged to become the Secret Wartime Tunnels beneath Dover castle. |
