Dover Castle |

On the
hills overlooking the town of Dover and the port is the castle
dating back to Henry II (1100).
Today,
the
castle is run by
English Heritage. Much of the building has been restored and
opened to the public. This can take up to 1/2 a day to
cover. There is a mini-train to take you round and see the main
sights, which can be useful for those with disabilities.
If
you wish you can just wonder around, as there is plenty to see, along with
the spectacular views from the topp[ of the castle.
Sitting alongside the castle is the Roman Pharos (or
lighthouse), of which over have half still stands. |

Western Height |

On
the opposite side of the cliffs are the Western Heights.
This was a military
fortification in the 1700s,there was a triple spiral staircase leading
down to the beach, some of the military grounds still can be found,
while walking around the meadows.
The wildlife around
here is beautiful, with butterflies and birds, and many wild flowers

Battle of Britain Memorial |

This
Battle of Britain Memorial Site is situated in a peaceful setting in Capel le
Ferne, just outside Dover, overlooking the English Channel.
Stroll among the
memorials which consist of a stone pilot, gazing into the skies above
the channel, this stands in the centre of 3 propellers measuring 38
metres long, which have been cut into the chalk of the cliffs.
