London now has a new pedestrian bridge linking the north and south banks.
The Millennium Bridge finally re-opened on Friday 22nd February 2002. Nicknamed
the Wobbly Bridge, because of the excessive swaying, caused by people walking
across on its official opening day, over a year ago.
The swaying was so extreme that people were ending up on their hands and knees
or suffering motion sickness.
Over a year later (and £5 000 000), the problem has been cured.
It is quite
busy at the moment and will stay that way for the foreseeable future, due in
part to the massive amount of publicity the project has received.
