The original bridge on this site dates back to 1811 and was designed by John
Rennie. It was opened on 18th June 1817, to commemorate the second anniversary
of the Battle of Waterloo, by the Prince Regent; The Bridge was originally named
the Strand Bridge until 1816 and consisted of nine arches.
The present Bridge, which was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert, opened in 1942. It
has five arches and is made of cantilevered reinforced concrete bob girders.
There are explosive chambers built into the bridge from WWII.
Of all the
bridges in central London, this offers the most panoramic views. |
