The
gallery was founded in 1856 by 5th Earl of Stanhope, and didn’t move to its
present address until the 1890’s. An extra wing in Orange Street was built
in 1937.
This
gallery now holds over 9000 portraits of famous British people. Old
portraits of people such as Henry VII and Sir Thomas More were by Holbein
and Sir William Churchill by Sickert. The oldest portrait is that of Henry
VII dating back to 1505.

The most popular gallery must be of the Royals, dating back over 400 years
to the present Queen, Elizabeth II, and also
includes Diana, Princess of Wales.
The portrait gallery is not just paintings of famous
people, but also includes photographs, sculptures and sketches. |
