BUCKINGHAM
PALACE |
|
This palace, which is the Queens official residence, has 600+ rooms. It was
built in 1820 and although a number of Kings and Queens have resided here, most
didn’t like it as they thought it was cold, dirty and they were frequently
smoked out by the chimneys.
Queen Victoria lived here until Albert died and then went off to Balmoral. After
her death, Edward II gave orders to have the place cleaned up.

 |
|
Aston Webb was called in to give a new frontage, which included the front
balcony.
The only Queen that really liked the palace was Queen Mary who filled the palace
and garden with flowers. The present Queen, Queen Elizabeth II prefers Windsor Castle to Buckingham
Palace.
A Royal Standard flag, which flies above the central balcony, designates whether
the queen is in residence or not.
The gardens at the back, stretch over 45 acres, and have their own lake,
heliport and covered swimming pool.
