The gallery dates back to 1897 and has had extensions made a few times. It is
the home of British art from the 16th century.
Here you can see the vast collection of Turner, and Picasso, and the 20th
century paintings by Hockney, Lichtension, Bacon, and Jackson Pollock.

The Tate has a good children's workshop and provides plenty of work areas for
those who wish to draw.
Some of the
past exhibitions have caused controversy. I can remember once when my youngest
was about 3 years old and there was two chairs sitting on top of each other, so
he decided to sit on them (like you do), before we realised what had happened
all the security people came running, so you have to keep your eye on the little
ones, because there is only a white painted line on the floor to indicate these
types of exhibits. |

Tate British
I preferred the Tate British to the Tate Modern as there were
more activity's to do here. The activities help you to understand some of the
pictures and shows you what to look for in the picture. There are a number of
work sheets which include drawing, colouring and collage.
To find your way around can be hard because the names of the
rooms are on the inside of the rooms.
But at least with the British Tate you can see something in the picture,
where as in in the Modern I could not see anything in the plain blue painting.
