This is another of London's famous landmarks connected to St Stephens Tower and
the bell, 'Big Ben'.
Parliament, the word meaning 'a place to talk', is where the Government
and House of Lords presides over important matters.
Originally it was called the Palace of Westminster where the Kings and Queens
of England lived and held meetings, which is when the word parliament came

Westminster Hall is the only original part of the palace standing after a fire
in 1834.
Charles Barry and A.W.N. Pugin designed today’s Houses of Parliament, which
contains 11 courtyards, over 2 miles of passages and 1100 apartments/offices
along with the hall for Parliament and Lords.
Since 1642 no monarch has been allowed in the Commons. Today's House of Lords
began business in 1847 and still today they approve new laws, which have been
passed by the Commons. As well as being the highest court in England where final
appeals can be heard.
Each year the ceremony of the State Opening of Parliament is held, which is
when the Queen gives her speech on behalf of the government. |
