The monument
commemorates Nelson’s last and greatest victory at Trafalgar.
Built by William
Railton and standing 145ft high, the Corinthian column was
finished in 1842 and topped with a bronze capital, cast from old
guns from the Woolwich Arsenal. The statue of Nelson standing
17ft was made by E.H. Bailey and placed on top of the column in
1843.
