TOWER
BRIDGE.
Sir Horace Jones was architect and John Wolfe-Barry was
appointed engineer.
This must be one of London's best-known landmarks. The Bridge
took eight years to build and was opened by the Prince of Wales
in 1894. The towers are built of steel frames and covered with
stone in a gothic style. Measuring 268 metres from embankment to
embankment. Above the bridge was a walkway, which allowed people
to cross the bridge in the old days. This was because when the
pool of London (river) was busy, the bridge used to be raised
more frequently. But now the drawbridge is raised about 5 times
a week. |

TOWER BRIDGE
EXHIBITION.
Today's Tower Bridge is still a working bridge. But also
contains a museum. The museum containing interactive computers,
holograms and working models shows how the bridge was built
along with how it works. You enter through one of the towers and
work your way up the stairs viewing videos and talks on the way,
until you get to the walkway at the top which stands over 40
metres above the water level. The view is magnificent from the
top allowing you to see both sides of the river. Afterwards, you
work your way back down the other side to lower ground level.
Although there are a lot of stairs involved, they are in stages
so it’s not such hard going. For the disabled there is a lift to
take you to each level. |
