In the south east corner of the square is
what was the
smallest police station in London. Built inside a lamp post, it was capable of
holding one policeman and was mainly used as a lookout post during
demonstrations (pre 1960), with a direct line to Scotland Yard. Now it is
mainly used by cleaners to store their equipment. Many protest marches tend to
finish here
Every Christmas a huge tree is erected
on the
square which is an annual gift from the Norwegians in recognition of the help
Britain gave in WW II. . Leading up to Christmas, choirs sing Carols around the
tree. On New Years eve massive crowds assemble here to see in the New Year.
The fountains and Nelson Column are boarded up
for the celebrations.
This is the home for what must be the best fed
pigeons in the world. The selling of bird seed is no longer permitted as the
pigeons are considered to be a health hazard.
