Westminster Abbey has
stood on this site for over 900 years. Commissioned by Edward
the Confessor, the original Westminster Abbey was consecrated in
1065. Edward died a few days afterwards and became its first
customer.
The first coronation
was that of William the Conquer in 1066, most of the English
monarchs have been crowned here since. Today's Abbey has been
built up over the proceeding years.
Architecturally it is
a Gothic marvel with wonderful flying buttresses.
