Thomas Cromwell and
the Lords of the Council for refusing to sign the Oath of
Supremacy questioned Thomas Moore in the guardrooms in 1534.
In 1610 Archbishop
Bancroft bequeathed his library, which was to form the nucleus
of today's extensive ecclesiastical library. In the 1630's
Archbishop Laud carried out a lot of restoration work.
During and after the
Civil War, the Palace was used as a prison. At the restoration
the Palace was given back to the Archbishop.
In 1834 Edward Blore
restored the Palace, taking six years.
After being damaged by bombing in World War II the Lollards
Tower was restored and converted into apartments. The Great Hall
was also restored.
