This is the 8th
church to stand on this site. The 6th had been destroyed by the Great Fire of
London in 1666, but then was rebuilt by Wren between 1670-1684, only to be
destroyed in 1940 by the German Luftwaffe. The church, rebuilt in 1957 is a
reconstruction of Wrens church and the original drawings were used. St Brides
has the tallest steeple in London and was once described as a “madrigal in
stone”. It is also the church that gave its shape to the traditional tiered
wedding cake.
Within the St
Brides is a collection of coffins throughout the ages.
Shakespeare and
Chaucer occasionally attended this St. Brides.
Sir Francis Drake
was married here.
Samuel Pepy's was christened here. |
