Emperor
Constantine built the church, which is built on the site
of a pagan temple, in the 4th century, after he converted
to Christianity and was dedicated to his mother Helena.
A Benedictine
Nunnery founded in 1204—1538 resided here. During this
time the church was rebuilt adding a separate nave for the
nuns.
The church was
then given to a relative of Thomas Cromwell, who sold it
to the Leatherseller's Company, which then became their
parish church.
