William I after the
Norman Conquest gave Saint Mary’s, which was run by the monks of
Westminster, to them.
In 1775—7 the church
was rebuilt to depict a simple village church.
The east window shows the connection to a royal family. Margaret
Beaufort, who was grandmother of Henry VII with Henry VIII
and Elizabeth I.
