Saint Mary-Le-Bow,
which dates back to 1091, has had a tragic history. With towers
collapsing causing the death of twenty people, along with 16 men
being hung and one woman being burnt. The church had to be
closed and re-opened after it was reconscrated.
Saint Mary-Le-Bow was
burnt down in the Great fire and rebuilt by Wren, to which he
added his most complicated spire. The church was bombed in World
War II. Lawrence King eventually rebuilt Saint Mary-Le-Bow in
the early 60’s. Within
the church are the remains of a Norman
crypt.
