Dick
Whittington paid for this church to be rebuilt in 1409. After the Great Fire of
London, Wren rebuilt the Saint Michael's Paternoster Royal in 1694. But the
steeple was not finished until 1713. Although badly damaged by World War II
bombing, much of the interior survived along with the pulpit, font cover, sword
rest and two statues of Moses and Aaron which stand either side of the alter.
Even today much of the interior is pre-war. John Hayward designed a stain glass
window of Dick Whittington and his cat. He is also buried in the churchyard
here. |
