The first Saint Peter's
church was built by order of Lucius, who was the first christen
King of Britain in AD 179, and is said to be standing on the site
of the Roman Basilica
Although Saint Peter's
was rebuilt after the Great Fire by Wren in 1675—81, the present
day church was restored by J.D. Wyatt. There isn’t much of Wrens
interior left either, except for a wooden screen, pulpit and
soundboard.
Mendelssohn twice played
on the organ, which is a Father Smith, in 1840 and 1842.
