This church is the
largest parish church within the City of London and dates back
to 1137.
In king Henry VI’s
time (1450) the church was rebuilt. Although the Great Fire
stopped around the corner, it was still badly damaged, and
Joshua Marshall, Wrens master mason, carried out much of the
work.
Across the road from
St Sepulchre was Newgate Prison, which stood on the grounds
today’s Old Bailey until 1902. The church used to ring the Great
Bell on the morning of Executions; this still stands in a glass
case on one of the church pillars.
