ST.
STEPHENS WALBROOK. |
|
The original church
(which stood on the Walbrook river) was on the west side of the
riverbank. But was then rebuilt around 1439 on the east side of
the riverbank. In 1672 Wren rebuilt the church again after the
Great Fire destroyed it.

Many of the designs he
used here were later used on a greater scale in St. Paul's. The
church was later described as one of Wrens masterpieces all over
the world. In 1940 the church was badly damaged, but luckily many
of 17th century fittings survived. The church is probably more
famous for its connection to the Revd Dr Chad Varah who in the early
‘50’s founded the Samaritans here.
Saint Stephen's
Walbrook has had major restoration to it and was reopened in
1987. |
