HISTORY
OF BUILDING.
In
1616 Inigo Jones was commissioned to build a house in
Greenwich Park for Anne of Denmark but died three years later
never seeing the finished building.
It was then given to Queen Henrietta Maria, who asked Inigo Jones
to complete the house. He decided to use the Palladian style and
when it was final finished the Queen was so pleased, that she
called it the ‘House of Delights’.

During the Civil War the Parliamentary forces occupied it. After
the war, most of the Crowns land was sold off, along with many
paintings, which included Rubens and Van Dyer, were sold.
But Greenwich and the Queens House were kept. During the
Commonwealth period the house was used for Generals lying in
state.
After the Restoration, the grounds and palace were returned to
Charles II and then in 1690 the Earl of Dorset became the first
ranger of Greenwich Park and occupied the house. George I landed
in Greenwich in 1714 and later held his first official reception
in the house.
In 1806 the Royal Naval Asylum as a sailor’s orphan’s school
brought the House. Colonnades were added in 1809 to commemorate
the Battle of Trafalgar and later that year two wings were added
to accommodate the schools 950 pupils.
After the school moved in 1933, it was restored and reopened as
the National Maritime museum in 1937. In 1980’s more restoration
work was carried out and the second floor returned to how it might
have looked in the 17th century. |

Queen's House
The museum is great to go
around. Again, they can give us a question sheet to work on , which makes you
understand the history much better.
They sometimes do little plays in the
central hall dressed in period customs.
