William the Conqueror started building the Tower in 1078, to impress and
intimidate Londoner’s. Which it did, impress them that is. In 1272 Henry the III
added the White Tower, He also acquired many animals including leopards and
polar bears. But now the Tower is a museum for arms, armour and the Crown
Jewels. |

Over the years, many deaths have occurred on the Green, especially around Henry
VIII’s time when he executed two of his wives, You can still see the Traitor's
Gate where prisoners such as Sir Thomas More and Sir Walter Raleigh where held,
before their execution.
The Crown Jewels, must be one of the most popular parts to visit, dating back to
1660, but be prepared to queue (wait in line) and you don’t have that long to
view the jewels.
While touring the Tower, there are Yeoman Warders (nicknamed Beefeaters) dressed
in Tudor-style uniforms who have looked after the Tower since 1485. They are
always willing to answer any questions, and tell you stories about the Tower of
London.
