This monument was
unveiled in 1893 by the Duke of Westminster in memory of the 7th
Earl of Shaftsbury.
It was the first
London statue to be cast in aluminium.
Eros, God of Love,
stands in the middle of Piccadilly Circus and when it was
originally unveiled there was a water fountain with cup to drink
from which was soon stolen.
Over the New Year the monument is boarded up during the
celebrations, to protect it from revellers.
