Edward VII decided
after the death of his mother in 1901 that he wanted a memorial
for her. Taking five years to build Edward
never got to see the finished product.
The memorial cost
£325,000 and 2300 tons of marble was used. This is the largest
monument to a monarch (in England) and sits in front of
Buckingham Palace at the beginning of the Mall.
George V knighted the designer Aston Webb on the steps in 1911.
