‘In
the Clink’, meaning to be in prison,
originated from a jail on this site and became the slang term for being in any
prison.
The prison was in use from the 12th century until 1780 and was owned by the
Bishop of Winchester. Anybody who disturbed the peace in the district of
Bankside was imprisoned, from priests to prostitutes. It was later burnt down in
the Gordon Riots and never rebuilt.
