The collection takes
its name from Sir Richard Wallace whose family was a life long
collector of Oriental and Continental arms and armour, Sèvres
porcelain and Limoges enamel. There is a gallery with a Gallic
theme. But the best gallery must be the collection of Rubens,
Rembrandts, Claude, Valázquez , Frans Hals and Titian.

After Sir Richard
Wallace’s death in 1890 the collection went to his wife, who
then left it to the nation on condition that it was always kept
in central London.
Set in a stately house and hidden behind Oxford Street, the
museum and gallery seems almost to be forgotten and can be very
quite and peaceful. It makes for a relaxing atmosphere to go
round, and is truly well worth a visit. |
