There was a hospital previously on the site of St James
Palace (St James Hospital) which nursed lepers and what is now the park were once used as burial grounds.
The park was formally made a Royal Park by Henry VIII and
enclosed with trees.
Later in the 18th century the Park was frequently used for
duals, and highwaymen regularly prayed on people.
Along with the gates and the Broad Walk which cuts
through the park they all
form part of the Queen Victoria Memorial
